Recessed Ceiling Domes vs. Surface Mount Ceiling Domes
Custom ceiling designs are all the rage these days. Coffered ceilings, tin, painted textures, wood, and faux finishes have taken the place of the flat, boring ceiling. And we couldn’t be happier! We love designing custom ceilings for our clients. One of the most common questions we get is in regards to dome ceilings; what’s the difference between recessed ceiling domes and surface mounted ceiling domes?
Recessed Ceiling Domes
Recessed ceiling domes simply are dome ceilings that extend above the surface of your ceiling. However, recessed ceiling domes do not necessarily require that you always work up into your attic. Depending upon your current ceiling height, you can always frame a new ceiling below your current ceiling and then install a recessed ceiling dome in-between the two. While this is more the exception than the rule, most recessed ceiling domes extend above your current ceiling and work up into your attic. Here are a couple of pictures of recessed ceiling domes. Below them, you'll find the exception, watch the video and see how we framed in a new ceiling 18" below the current ceiling. Note that method is conducive to remodels where it could be very costly or impossible with current attic clearance. Feel free to fast forward as I get pretty technical in how this look was achieved.
Surface Mount Ceiling Domes
A surface mounted ceiling dome is one that is mounted directly on the surface of your ceiling and drops below your current ceiling height. They’re similar to a ceiling medallion, but thicker and generally larger. The surface mounted ceiling dome are generally used on the 1st floors of a 2 story home or where attic clearance is an issue. Here’s an example of a suspended ceiling dome in a dining room.
Both Recessed & Suspended Ceiling Domes
What? Yep, you can do both at the same time. You probably figured it out by now. Part of the dome is recessed and part of the dome is suspended. This is a design element that draws the focus to a specific area in the home that says, " Look at me! I'm unique ".
Shapes and Sizes of Ceiling Domes
The beauty of customizing and installing ceiling domes is that there is no standard. You can get as creative as you want, as long as your home’s existing ceiling allows for the design. Low ceilings may suffer if you want to install large domes. But every situation is unique, so call us and we’ll check it out.
Decorative Ceiling Domes
Your unique custom ceiling dome can be painted to perfectly accent the room in which it is installed. You can take a minimalistic approach or truly create a work of art that will be a real attention-getter every time someone enters your home.
