SHOULDER FLAT ARCH SPECIFICATIONS

A shoulder flat arch is a simple yet elegant rounding of the corners of an opening. This arch is especially popular with low header heights and larger openings when the rise of the other arch styles is impractical. With the shoulder flat arch, you keep your original header height with the added benefit of an elegant radius corner.

Material

Medium Density Fiberboard (MDF)
(High Grade Moisture Resistant)

Thickness (in.)

3/4” – 1" (depending on width)

Depth (in.)

1” to 5 ½”. Any depth over 5½” will be made as a split (a 2¾” arch for both the front and back of the opening). Lastly, a shoulder flat arch depth is limited to 18”. Anything greater than 18" is considered a barrel vault.

HOW TO MEASURE SHOULDER FLAT ARCHES

  1. Measure the depth of your opening to the nearest 1/8”.
  2. Choose your radius corner (reference “Choosing a Radius Corner” below for more information)
  3. Enter the location (place) where the shoulder flat arch will be installed in your project (for example: Entry / Dining Rm, Living / Bdrm Hall, Arch #1).

CHOOSING YOUR SHOULDER FLAT ARCH RADIUS CORNER

When deciding what size radius corner to use, we always recommend starting with personal preference. However, the rule of thumb is that the wider the opening, the larger the radius corner. For example, an 8 inch radius corner on a 3 foot opening would be more in line that on a 12 foot opening. An easy way to decide, is to mark down from the header on the stud, and mark the header out from the stud your desired radius corner. Then stand back and see if you like it.

HOW TO INSTALL SHOULDER FLAT ARCHES

Every shoulder flat arch kit comes with tailored installation instructions to your specifications. It really is as simple as measuring and marking your header, marking down from the header, and then aligning and fastening each shoulder flat arch corner to the stud and header.

Christine Riggs / Project Manager

I used to cringe when I’d hear a client request an elliptical arch, because I knew it meant I’d have to build it as oppose to delegating this to one of my guys. Plus the time it takes to build these correctly would take me half a day. Not anymore. Archways & Ceilings elliptical arches are too quick and easy. I couldn’t believe the simplicity as well as the ease of installation with the provided detailed instructions. Truly an amazing product.
