A soft segmented arch, also known as an eyebrow or flat arch, is a single radius arch that has a more subtle (softer) curve than all the other arch styles. The ability to choose your own rise along with the simplicity in design has made this arch style the most popular.
How to Measure A Soft Segmented Arch
You can download our “How to Measure” instructions under the instructions tab of our pricing calculator.
- Measure the depth of your opening to the nearest 1/8”.
- Measure the width of your opening to the nearest 1/8”.
- Choose your rise (reference “Choosing Your Rise” below for more information)
- Enter the location (place) where the soft arch will be installed in your project (for example: Entry / Dining Rm, Living / Bdrm Hall, Arch #1).
How to Install Soft Archways
You can download our “How to Install” instructions under the instructions tab of our pricing calculator. While these are for the soft arch kit in the adjacent video, your install instructions will be tailored to your specifications for easy install.
How to Drywall a Soft Segmented Arch
Drywalling a soft arch is comprised of measuring the curvature of the arch, cutting the drywall to the curvature and depth, forming and fastening in place.
- Wetting the back of the drywall (as shown in the video) will make the drywall easier to bend.
- For tighter radius soft arches, consider using a double layer of either ¼” or ¼” flex drywall.
How to Finish Soft Archways
Drywall, plaster, wood veneer, brick veneer, trim, tile … the list is seemingly endless. Whether you want your soft archway to have a simple or an ornate finish, the choice is yours.
Soft Segmented Arch Specifications
|Material||Medium Density Fiberboard (MDF)(High Grade Moisture Resistant)|
|Thickness (in.)||1” – 1 ½” (depending on width)|
|Depth (in.)||1” to 5 ½” Depths over 5 ½” will be made as a 2 piece split. A 2 piece split is a 5 ½” deep arch with a split cut down the center. When installing, finish the split cut and put one 2 ¾” piece on the front and the other 2 ¾” piece on the back of the opening.|
Choosing Your Soft Arch Rise
Width Based Chart
|12” – 24”||4”|
|24” – 34 ½”||6”|
|34 ½” – 60”||8”|
|60” – 96”||10”|
|Greater than 96”||12”|
Based on the width, make your rise 1 ½” to 2” per foot (12.5% – 16.5%). For example, if you have a 38 1/2” opening, you’d have a 6 3/8” rise (38.5 x .165 = 6.375(rounded)).
Constant Rise Method
Regardless of the width, assign a fixed rise to all openings. For example, set a 3ft and a 10ft opening, both with a 10” rise.
