A shoulder flat arch is a simple yet elegant rounding of the corners of an opening. This arch is especially popular with low header heights and larger openings when the rise of the other arch styles is impractical. With the shoulder flat arch, you keep your original header height with the added benefit of an elegant radius corner.CHECK OUT SHOULDER FLAT ARCH FEATURED PROJECT
How to Measure Shoulder Flat Arches
- Measure the depth of your opening to the nearest 1/8”.
- Choose your radius corner (reference “Choosing a Radius Corner” below for more information)
- Enter the location (place) where the shoulder flat arch will be installed in your project (for example: Entry / Dining Rm, Living / Bdrm Hall, Arch #1).
How to Install Shoulder Flat Arches
You can download our “How to Install” instructions under the instructions tab of our pricing calculator. While these are for the universal arch kit, a 13 inch radius corner shoulder flat arch, your install instructions will be tailored to your specifications for easy install.
How to Drywall a Shoulder Flat Arch
Drywalling a shoulder flat arch is comprised of measuring the curvature of the arch, cutting the drywall to the curvature and depth, forming and fastening in place. The adjacent video shows how to drywall the universal arch kit, a 13 inch radius corner shoulder flat arch in a remodel.
- Wetting the back of the drywall (as shown in the video) will make the drywall easier to bend.
- For tighter radius soft arches, consider using a double layer of either ¼” or ¼” flex drywall.
How to Finish Shoulder Flat Arches
Drywall, plaster, wood veneer, brick veneer, trim, tile … the list is seemingly endless. Whether you want your shoulder flat arch to have a simple or an ornate finish, the choice is yours.
Shoulder Flat Arch Specifications

|Depth (in.)||1” to 5 ½” Depths over 5 ½” will be made as a 2 piece split. A 2 piece split is a 5 ½” deep arch with a split cut down the center. When installing, finish the split cut and put one 2 ¾” piece on the front and the other 2 ¾” piece on the back of the opening.|
Choosing Your Shoulder Flat Arch Radius Corner
When deciding what size radius corner to use, we always recommend starting with personal preference. However, the rule of thumb is that the wider the opening, the larger the radius corner. For example, an 8 inch radius corner on a 3 foot opening would be more in line that on a 12 foot opening. An easy way to decide, is to mark down from the header on the stud, and mark the header out from the stud your desired radius corner. Then stand back and see if you like it.
