A cross vault, also known as a groin vault cross or a cross barrel vault, is a subtle yet profound enhancement on a groin vault. The two intersecting barrel vaults at right angles are extended past the intersection that creates the cross. Cross vaults work best when they are recessed up into your ceiling and are a great alternative to boring tray ceiling.CHECK OUT CROSS VAULTS FEATURED PROJECT
How to Measure A Cross Barrel Vault Ceiling
- Measure the long side of your cross vaulted ceiling to the nearest 1/8”. Do NOT subtract out your extensions. This is your overall length.
- Measure the short side of your cross ceiling to the nearest 1/8”. Do NOT Subtract out your extensions. This is your overall width.
- Choose the length of your extensions (12″, 18″, 24″, 30″, or 36″).
- Choose a rise for your cross barrel vault to the nearest 1/8”. Note our suggested rise along with “Choosing Your Rise” in our Tech Specs section for help and clarification.
- Enter the location (place) where the cross barrel ceiling will be installed in your project (for example: Master Suite, Dining, Entry, #1 Cross Vault).
How to Install a Cross Vaulted Ceiling
Installing a cross vaulted ceiling simply consists of fastening both the barrel struts and the groin struts as provided in your custom tailored installation instructions. The adjacent video, please excuse the music and quality, will show you the steps.
How to Drywall a Groin Vault Cross
Drywalling a groin vault cross ceiling is comprised of measuring the curvature of both the barrel and groin struts, cutting the drywall to the curvature and length, forming and fastening in place.
The adjacent video shows how to drywall the groin vault center.
- Wetting the back of the drywall (as shown in the video) will make the drywall easier to bend.
- For tighter radius groin ceilings, consider using a double layer of either ¼” or ¼” flex drywall.
How to Finish a Cross Barrel Vaulted Ceiling
Drywall, plaster, tile, tongue and groove, bead board, brick veneer, trim, mural, faux…the list is seemingly endless. Whether you want your crossed vault ceiling to have a simple or an ornate finish, the choice is yours. All of our crossed vault kits can be designed to handle any finish you can imagine. Plus, they readily accept chandeliers.

Choosing a Cross Barrel Vault Rise
Choosing a rise for your cross vault ceiling is mostly personal taste along with the overall design/theme of the home. Our suggested height, is a good place to start. Also, make sure that you keep the length of your extensions in mind as they will directly limit your rise. For example, if you have a 120.000 inch long side x 120.000 inch short side with 24.000 inch extensions, then you’re only really left with a 72.000 inch curvature width (120.000 in – (24.000 in x 2) = 72.000 in). In this case the most rise you could have would be 36.000 inches, which would make this cross vault half-circular in style. If you’re looking for a softer look as shown in most of the pictures, we would suggest 18.000 inches of rise.
If you have any concerns, please call us. We’d be happy to walk you through the process of choosing your rise.
