Dome Construction in 12 Easy Steps

The old way of installing dome ceilings is arduous. But with newer prefabricated kits, dome construction can be completed in just 12 easy steps!

If you’ve ever been on a jobsite when a dome was being constructed, you might think the process is a bit overwhelming. The truth is, it can be. But when you use our prefabricated kits, dome construction is easy. In just 12 steps, you can transform a hollow ceiling space into a fully-installed dome ready for drywall.

For those of you who aren’t familiar with this type of ceiling, a dome ceiling is a hollow upper half of a sphere. It offers some flexibility in that you can choose whether you’d like it to be soft or half circle. Traditionally, this ceiling is framed up into your attic space. It makes for a stunning addition to any entryway, dining room, study, or master bathroom.

Now that we’ve got the introductions out of the way, it’s time to review the 12 easy steps that result in dome construction. But before we get started, you must unpack all of the pieces of your kit, and that includes one of the most important pieces: the instruction sheet.

Step 1: Frame your dome in its designated spot. Remember to use traditional framing methods so that you meet local code requirements. Dome construction may be easy, but that doesn’t mean you want to have to tear it down and start again.

Step 2: If you have chosen an inner light ring, this step is for you. If not, proceed to step 3. Okay, here are the lengthy instructions: Frame your inner box using 2x4 framing.

Step 3: Frame a dome beam across the center of your dome using the appropriate lumber for the type of light fixture you plan to install. Reference your spec chart on the instruction sheet to find your total rise.

Step 4: Measure and mark the center point on the side of your dome beam.

Step 5: Secure your square wood tie to the center of your dome beam.

Step 6: Measure and mark the center lines of your inner and outer box on all four sides. You’re halfway finished with your dome construction project.

Step 7: Measure and mark your angle block placement for your inner and outer boxes. Reference your spec chart for measurements. When setting your angle blocks, you’re going to be at a 45 degree angle. Cut the 2x6 angle blocks for the outer ring and 2x4 blocks for the outer ring.

Step 8: Nail in your 45 degree angle blocks now. You’ll have four for the inner and four outer. The 2x6 angle blocks go in each corner and mount flush to the 2x4 inner box. Then, the 2x4 angle blocks must be nailed to each corner of the inner box.

Step 9: Install outer ring, which will come in 4 pieces.

Step 10: Install the inner ring.

Step 11: Now, your dome is starting to take shape. Attach the dome rafter to your square wood tie. Use the square side of your dome rafters. Just one more dome construction step left now!

Step 12: Using the bevel side, place your dome rafters onto the outer ring and attach with nails.

Now the dome is installed and it’s time for drywall. You see? Dome construction is easier than you thought. Check out the video below to see a dome installation in action.
