Are you tired of boring flat ceilings or boxed up tray ceilings for your master bedrooms? Well it is time to think outside the box. If you are looking to dress up your master bedroom and bring in an architectural element then take a look at some of these arched ceiling designs.
Groin vault Ceilings
Groin vaults are a customer favorite and look good in any part of a house but they especially look great in the master bedroom. Implementing a groin vault into your design of a master bedroom is quite simple. A groin vault can either drop down below your ceiling or pop up into your attic space. It all depends on what design works best for your needs. This particular ceiling will have your home owners saying “Wow!”
Barrel Vault ceilings
Barrel vaults are one of the easiest details to add to a master bedroom because they allow for the most adjustability. Meaning, you are not limited on ceiling height. If you don’t have room to pop up into the attic then the barrel can be adjusted to have a softer rise that will allow it to fit your living space but if you have the room you can increase the rise of the barrel to get a more curved arched ceiling. These particular ceilings look great going from one wall to another and running the length of the room or by adding them to your tray ceiling to give you some extra height in your room.
Cove Ceilings
Coved ceilings are a subtle approach to add that extra kick of detail to a master bedroom. Usually this particular ceiling will help create a softer overall appearance and bring that custom feel to your bedroom. Cove ceilings can also be grand if you implement the right design to feature this particular ceiling too. For example, if you have a tray ceiling you can create a cove ceiling design that will bring a grand architectural element to the room.
Step by step instructions illustrating how to properly install a barrel vault ceiling from Archways & Ceilings Made Easy or simply watch the “How to” video here!
Step 1- Using traditional framing construction to meet code requirements, frame a brace centered down the length of your barrel vault.
Step 2- Snap a center line to the underside of the center brace. Note: The center line must be centered down the length of the barrel vault within ¼”.
Step 3- Measure and mark down from the bottom of the center brace along each wall and at each end ______ inches (rise). Note: The rise does not include the thickness of the center brace.
Step 4- Snap a horizontal line at the rise mark on each wall down the length of your barrel vault.
Step 5- Starting at one end of your barrel vault, align the pre-cut mitered half of the arch to the rise mark on the stud. Using a nail gun (or screw gun), attach the half to the stud. Tip: if using screws predrill pilot holes.
Step 6- Align the square cut half to the center line of the center brace and nail (screw) in place.
Step 7- Repeat steps 5 and 6 to complete the whole strut.
Step 8- While spacing the barrel vault struts 16” O.C., continue installing the struts down the length of the barrel vault until finished.
Step 9- If necessary and/or according to code requirements, install strongbacks atop the barrel vault struts.
Step 10- If necessary and/or according to code requirements, fire block the barrel vault along the perimeter of the outer struts.
Step 11- That’s it! You are now ready for electric and drywall!

When designing a home it is important to incorporate architectural details such as groin vaults, dome ceilings, coved ceilings and barrel vaults. These particular additions will help take your home to the next level.
Here are some ideas for your next project:
Many Homes have long hallways and are often over looked, but this is a great place to add a series of groin ceilings. A groin ceiling will add character and bring that old world feel to any home. With a little planning up front, most hallways can incorporate a groin vault detail. The hallway below is an example of taking a normal boring hallway and bumping it up to the next level. Also, these particular groins will have columns built underneath them to accent and capture the true old world architectural design.
Domed Ceilings are another popular detail that can be easily incorporated into most homes. Often you can find these ceilings in foyers, master bedrooms and bathrooms. One place that can be overlooked is over the stairs. In this particular case, the home had unwanted roof rafters that would leave the home with hard funky lines when finished. So in order to avoid this, we domed the top of the stairway not only to add a little design but also to hide the pitch of the roof.
Note: The Archways & Ceilings Product can be easily modified and custom made to any home. See the example below of how we adjusted the dome rafters to go up and around the window.
Another design element that can be incorporated in most homes, would be the barrel ceiling. The barrel vault is great because it has more leeway for a home. What I mean by this, is the rise of the arch can easily be altered to fit the needs of any room. The barrel vault can either be a full half circle, elliptical, or a soft arch. For example, if you have plenty of ceiling height then a half circle barrel is often preferred, but if you do not have a lot of room to work with, then a softer barrel would be preferred. Not to mention the barrel vault can easily be intersected with conjoining archways. See example below.
Finally, pop up ceilings are most often overlooked and left square or rectangle in shape. The cove ceiling is a perfect fit for these particular ceilings. The cove will bring a subtle curve to your boxy ceiling and add a softer look. The cove ceiling is great when accompanied with accent lighting.
So remember, take a little time and plan plan plan. With a little planning, your next home will look like it should be on the cover of a magazine. Whether you add a groin ceiling, domed ceiling, cove ceiling or barrel vault the finished product will help take your home to the next level.
Looking to create the perfect media room? Well a great way to enhance a media room is to simply create a barrel vault. The barrel vault helps create the theater like experience by adding high ceilings. The barrel vault kit from Archways & Ceilings can be made to fit any media room for the ultimate watching experience.
Many homes have boxed up tray ceilings for the master bedroom, so if you are tired of the same old cookie cutter ceiling then perhaps you should add a barrel ceiling. A barrel ceiling kit from Archways & Ceilings is inexpensive, easy, and an architectural gem that can be added to any master bedroom.
Barrel ceilings are an excellent place for any master bathroom. The barrel vault can either span the whole width of the room or it can be boxed out to a smaller width in the center of the room. Both applications create a different look and feel. Take a look below at a barrel vault ceiling spanning the entire master bathroom and one that was placed in a boxed in setting.
One of the coolest applicatons of a barrel ceiling has to be found in the kitchen Archways & Ceilings supplied to a customer. This particular customer was looking to create a unique architectural element so they decided to create a series of barrel vaults that would be framed on top of old beams. The barrel vaults simply sat on top of these beams and later was drywalled and then coverd in brick. The combination of old world beams, multiple barrel ceilings and brick created in our opinion the coolest barrel ceiling for a kitchen.
Barrel Vault Ceilings are extremely popular because they can be added to almost any room. The rise of a barrel can be adjusted to create a half circle, elliptical or a soft appearance. What does this mean? Well, basically you can adjust the overall height of the barrel to fit your room. For example, if you have low ceilings then you would create a soft barrel ceiling. If you had high ceilings and were looking to make an impression then you would create a half circle barrel vault. If you had a tricky situation where the roof rafters were impeading in on your ceiling then you may need to create an elliptical barrel vault to help curve under the rafters and maximize your height.
The most common place Archways & Ceilings sees barrel vault ceilings at are in the hallways. Most of our customers are looking to add a little flare to their boring long hallways. By simply adding the barrel ceiling, the hallway now has character.
